Valio has decided to suspend the Bovaer pilot for the time being due to the re-evaluation initiated by the EU food safety authority European Food Safety Authority. EFSA has announced that it will conduct a scientific assessment of practical user experiences with Bovaer in addition to the safety assessments already completed to date. The continuation of the pilot will be reconsidered once the results of the re-evaluation are available.

“It is extremely important that EFSA conducts a new assessment of the practical user experiences with Bovaer in addition to the safety evaluations already carried out. This will provide dairy industry operators with more independent information to support their decision-making. We will wait for the results of EFSA’s review before making any decisions regarding the continuation of the pilot. Food safety and animal welfare are the foundation of everything Valio does. We never compromise on the wellbeing of people or animals,” says Valio’s Senior Vice President of Primary Production, Ulf Jahnsson.

Valio has been piloting the use of the 3-NOP feed additive (Bovaer) on several dozen farms since 2022. The ongoing pilot has focused on the commercialization of emission reductions, meaning integrating climate actions into profitable business operations. The pilot has proceeded according to plan and successfully, and no issues related to animal welfare or production associated with the use of Bovaer have been observed on the pilot farms.

Valio’s climate actions aim to reduce emissions generated in milk production. We are moving towards a carbon-neutral milk value chain primarily through four pathways:

1. We are sequestrating more atmospheric carbon into grass fields.
2. We are using manure to produce biogas, which is a replacement for fossil fuels in heavy transports.
3. We are reducing emissions from agricultural peatlands and developing suitable restoration methods for some peatlands.
4. We are continuing good work on animal welfare, feeding and breeding.

Only authorised feed supplements may be used for animal nutrition in Finland and the EU. All authorised feed additives undergo the EFSA’s rigorous safety assessment to ensure it is safe for animals, people and the environment.
