Valio’s Board of Directors decided on 3rd September 2012 to commence preliminary planning for a new production plant to manufacture fresh dairy products. The planning process will last from two to three years and explore the range of alternatives available to develop production in Riihimäki.
Riihimäki Town Council is expected to decide in favour of selling a 53 hectare plot of land to Valio Ltd. The plot is located on the south side of the current Valio Riihimäki plant and next to a motorway.
According to a preliminary agreement made with the Town of Riihimäki, Valio has first call on the land area if the conditions of the agreement are met and preliminary planning leads to a decision to start construction. The key issue for Valio is arranging easy access to the plot.
Valio’s fresh product dairy in Herajoki, Riihimäki is already 45 years old. The plant has been renovated and expanded over the years, but there is no further potential to increase capacity on the current plot.
“Buying the land area is Valio’s first step towards building a new dairy and warehousing on the plot. The potential to develop fresh dairy product manufacturing will be explored during preliminary planning,” says Valio’s Antti Rauhamaa, Chairman of the Board.
“If we decide to build a new production plant, the first stage would be completed towards the end of the decade,” concludes Mr Rauhamaa.
The goal is to make the decision within two years.
