Valio acted as organiser for the EWPA General Assembly Annual Congress 2012 (European Whey Products Association) held in Helsinki from 13–15 June. The association also chose to elect its new President from Valio, a long-time member company.
The annual congress discusses topical issues related to safeguarding the interests of European whey producers. Veli-Matti Riitamaa, a Valio Vice President, was elected the new president of the association (EWPA) on Thursday, 14th June 2012.
“Valio’s long participation in EWPA activities naturally had some impact on the choice. I consider my election as President also a vote for the association’s confidence in Valio,” says Veli-Matti Riitamaa.
Valio joined EWPA in 1998 and membership brings with it for instance a network of contacts and a source of information. EWPA now has 23 member companies.
The EWPA General Assembly Annual Congress is hosted in the Nordic countries every sixth year. Nordic member companies Valio and Arla arrange the congress in Finland and Denmark respectively. The congress was first held in Finland in 2000.
Future outlook and guests from the US
The Congress programme comprises two conferences. One is held for representatives of the member companies and invited guests, while the closed session is for representatives of the member companies only.
The open session topics focus, for instance, on the future outlook for the employment of whey and other milk proteins, as well as lactose, how the development of the silage market will impact milk proteins, plus the latest dairy industry trends in the European, Russian and US markets. Invited guests include, among others, representatives of US companies and Mika Koskinen, Managing Director of Valio’s Russian subsidiary.
The congress is held in Helsinki city centre and also features a leisure programme including a city sight-seeing tour and a cruise on s/v Gerda in the Helsinki archipelago.
EWPA’s goal is to support the business operations and development activities of its member companies, who are European whey producers, and communications concerning whey to potential customers and consumers.
