Dairy processes consume energy in the form of steam and electricity. The latter is mainly required in process equipment use and cooling.
Energy consumption and emissions into air
Large amounts of thermal energy are required in drying powder products, the heat treatment of some products, for cleaning, and in heating buildings. The boiler rooms at Valio plants are primarily maintained by subcontractors.
Energy production results in emissions into air. The quality and quantity of emissions depends on the fuel used in that energy production. Valio’s Lapinlahti and Seinäjoki boiler plants are included in the emissions trading system under the Kyoto Protocol.
Total energy consumption in 2014 stood at 744 GWh, up 5.8% on the previous year.
Electricity accounted for 32% of energy consumption in 2014. Electricity consumption increased by 5.6 GWh on the previous year to stand at 236 GWh.
Thermal energy consumption in 2014 totalled 508 GWh, up 41 GWh on the previous year. This considerable increase resulted from the use of thermal energy in a great deal more powder drying due to Russia’s import embargo.
In 2014, heat pumps recovered a total of 22 GWh of waste energy from processes.
Valio’s primary sources of thermal energy in 2014, calculated as thermal power, were peat (35%), renewable Finnish fuels (34%), and heavy fuel oil (15%). The share of Finnish fuels in energy production continued to increase and stood at 69% in 2014.
Carbon dioxide emissions from energy production resulting from burning fossil fuels and peat amounted to 124 200 tonnes, nitrogen oxide emissions to 259 tonnes, sulphur dioxide emissions to 235 tonnes, and particle emissions to 18 tonnes.
Valio’s environmental system
Valio has held an ISO 14001 environmental certificate covering its domestic operations since the year 2000.
The certificate was re-approved in 2012 to be in force until 29 September 2015. Environmental system performance undergoes continuous evaluation via internal and external audits.
Valio’s environmental goals are determined in three-year programs, and annual intermediate goals are set on the basis of the specific measures to be taken.
