Energy consumption and emissions

Energy consumption and related emissions

Dairy processes consume energy in the form of steam and electricity. The latter is mainly required in the use and cooling of process equipment.

Large amounts of thermal energy are required in powder product drying, heat treatment of specific products, cleaning, and heating buildings. The boiler rooms at Valio plants are primarily maintained by subcontractors, and by 2017 Valio will no longer use heavy fuel oil in heating any of its 12 production plants operating in Finland. Oulu (online 2016) and Jyväskylä (2017) are the final boiler plants converted.

The share of renewable fuels in thermal energy production was 34% in 2016 and that of Finnish fuels 72%.

Energy production results in emissions into air. The quality and quantity of those emissions depends on the fuel used in the energy production. Valio’s Lapinlahti and Seinäjoki boiler plants are included in the emissions trading system under the Kyoto Protocol.

Valio’s environmental system

Valio has held an ISO 14001 environmental certificate covering its domestic operations since the year 2000. The certificate was re-approved in 2015 to 29 September 2018.

Internal and external audits ensure continuous evaluation of environmental system performance.

Valio’s environmental goals are determined in three-year programs, and annual intermediate goals are set on the basis of the specific measures to be taken. The three-year programs enable proper focal areas, and measures for more controlled planning, implementation and efficiency.
