Valio is a member of the new consortium of 50 European partners seeking solutions to the challenges faced in food production. Known as EIT Food, the initiative has been granted funding of 400 million euros by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT).
Sustainable and safe food production is a significant and long-term global challenge. The UN has estimated that demand will increase 70 percent by 2050. EIT Food is seeking solutions for sustainable, safe and competitive food production, in collaboration with businesses, universities and research organisations from 13 countries. The other Finnish partners alongside Valio are the University of Helsinki and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. An associated network includes Finnish food industry players and start-ups.
The consortium’s goals encompass the advancement of consumer-centric product, service and process innovations, and accelerating the development of start-ups.
“Aside from the global challenges that lie ahead, the food industry offers significant potential for example in individual nutrition, digital services and new kinds of production technology. The EIT Food network hosts skilled partners in all these areas,” says Anu Kaukovirta-Norja, Senior Vice President, R&D at Valio.
