Most of milk’s carbon footprint is generated during primary production. Valio’s approximately 3,000 dairy farmers therefore play a key role in the success of climate work.
Together with the dairy farmers, we develop and promote actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from milk production.
The calculation of emissions and carbon sinks is based on the latest scientific knowledge, and we follow the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) when assessing and reporting our climate impacts. Using the certified Carbo® Environmental Calculator developed by Valio, dairy farms can calculate the footprint of their own raw milk.
The aim is also to sequester carbon primarily within the milk value chain. Actions that promote carbon sequestration include improving soil health, increasing the variety of grass species, and keeping fields green year-round.
