Valio Group’s sustainability focus areas are based on its business and owner strategy, themes that are relevant to stakeholders, and a thorough materiality assessment. Sustainability work covers the entire value chain from farm to table and focuses on themes through which the aim is to promote a sustainable food system.

Targets and indicators related to focus areas
We track our progress using concrete indicators that are taken into account as part of the company’s management and compensation practices. Progress towards these targets is reported annually in the sustainability report, which is published on Valio’s website.
Pioneering climate work
Focus areas: Carbon-neutral milk value chain, resource efficiency, and animal welfare.
Targets:
- Carbon-neutral milk value chain by 2035 and science-based climate targets (SBTi) 2030
- Renewable or recycled packaging materials 80% and recyclable packaging materials 100%
- Enabling the measurement of cattle welfare for all animal groups on dairy farms 2026 (AVWS)
Promoting wellbeing through products and services
Focus areas: Innovations and research supporting a sustainable food system, nutritious and tasty products, traceable product information.
Targets:
- Promoting Valio Food 2.0 research programme 2028
Securing the vitality of food production
Focus areas: Value creation for owners’ raw materials and labour, committed and healthy employees, security of supply.
Targets:
- Implementation of Future Valio Farmers training programme for dairy farmers
- Valio Voice employee engagement score among the top ten in the industry (above 7.9 globally)
- Injury frequency ≤ 5 (globally)
