Recovery beyond sports: How consumer expectations are reshaping beverage innovation

Recovery drinks are no longer just for athletes. From intense training and demanding workdays to hectic everyday routines and low-energy moments, consumers are increasingly looking for convenient ways to restore energy and support recovery throughout the day. As a result, recovery is evolving from a sports nutrition occasion into a broader everyday wellbeing opportunity.

For beverage manufacturers, this shift creates new opportunities. Today’s consumers expect products that do more than support post-exercise recovery. They are seeking solutions that help restore energy, support muscle recovery, and fit seamlessly into active lifestyles.

“Recovery has moved beyond post-exercise use to everyday wellbeing. Consumers are looking beyond sports performance and increasingly prioritizing energy, balance, and resilience throughout the day,” says Sinikka Saikkonen, Senior Business Development Manager at Valio.

Beyond protein: Balancing recovery and energy replenishment

Protein remains a cornerstone of recovery nutrition, but effective recovery also requires replenishing the body’s energy stores. This is driving demand for more balanced nutritional solutions that combine both functions in a single product.

Valio’s vanilla-flavoured recovery drink application was developed with this approach in mind. The concept combines high-quality milk protein with carbohydrates derived from hydrolysed lactose in a balanced 1:1 protein-to-carbohydrate ratio. While protein supports muscle recovery, hydrolysed lactose provides glucose and galactose, two naturally occurring sugars that help replenish energy stores in both muscle and liver. The formulation is also lactose free, supporting digestive comfort without compromising taste or functionality.

“It is no longer enough to offer a single functional benefit. Winning products support energy, recovery and wellbeing in one solution,” Saikkonen explains.

Supporting recovery with science

To support the development of the recovery drink application, Valio conducted a pilot study comparing a recovery drink based on Valio Eila PRO® lactose‑free milk powder containing hydrolysed lactose with a commercial, milk-based recovery drink. The study evaluated post-exercise recovery of strength and endurance and found no significant differences between the products, indicating that hydrolysed lactose performed comparably to conventional carbohydrate sources used in recovery beverages.

As recovery becomes part of everyday wellbeing, manufacturers have an opportunity to develop products that appeal to a broader audience than traditional sports nutrition alone. By combining high-quality protein, energy replenishment, digestive comfort and scientifically supported functionality, recovery drinks can meet evolving consumer expectations while creating new opportunities for innovation.
