Suomen Lantakaasu Oy has studied the feasibility of launching a biogas plant project in Säkylä, in the Satakunta region. Based on the study, the company will continue advancement of the new plant project in the region. With the plant planned in Satakunta, Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is moving towards its production target of one terawatt-hour by 2030.
Suomen Lantakaasu Oy currently exploring suitable locations for the biogas plant by mapping suitable construction sites along Luvalahdentie and in Bioharju, the industrial area in Länsi-Säkylä. At the same time, a suitable production concept for the area is also being explored and discussions are being held with potential feedstock suppliers. The selection of a suitable location will be made in cooperation with the municipality of Säkylä.
With the region’s abundant food industry and animal production, the Säkylä region has plenty of feedstock suitable for biogas production.
”Once completed, the Säkylä biogas plant will offer a range of benefits to operators in the region. It will offer a greater opportunity to recycle side streams from the regional food industry as nutrients for use by the region’s diverse agriculture and animal production, thereby improving the region’s fertilizer self-sufficiency and reducing nutrient runoff,” says Suomen Lantakaasu’s CEO Leena Helminen.
The aim is for the Säkylä biogas plant to be completed in 2029. The plant’s annual production volume would be approximately 100 GWh.
”The Säkylä biogas plant fits well into Suomen Lantakaasu’s biogas production portfolio due to the feedstock potential of the region’s agriculture and food industry,” Leena Helminen continues.
Suomen Lantakaasu’s biogas business projects are progressing
Suomen Lantakaasu’s two previous biogas plant projects in Nurmo, South Ostrobothnia, and in Kiuruvesi, Upper Savo, are in the construction phase. Both plants are scheduled to be operational in 2026. Together with the projects in Upper Savo and Nurmo, Suomen Lantakaasu’s new projects will clearly exceed half of the one terawatt-hour production target.
Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is a joint venture owned by food company Valio and biomethane company St1 Biokraft.
