Suomen Lantakaasu withdraws from Säkylä biogas plant project

Suomen Lantakaasu Oy has conducted a feasibility study on the construction of a biogas production plant in Säkylä, Satakunta. Based on the study, the company has decided to withdraw from advancing the plant project in the area and, in line with its strategy, will focus on the production of manure-based biogas elsewhere in Finland.

Suomen Lantakaasu will not continue the advancement of the biogas plant project in Säkylä. Based on the feasibility study conducted during the summer and autumn, it has been found that the uncertainty regarding future applications for investment subsidies and appropriations for biogas projects is significantly impacting the economic viability of this project. Another factor driving the decision to abandon the project is that it does not meet Suomen Lantakaasu’s strategic objectives of using manure as the main feedstock for the Säkylä plant.

“The study we have conducted in the Säkylä project has revealed that, given the current economic incentives, the relative amount of manure-based feedstock falls short of the volume needed in the Säkylä area. The emission reductions of manure-based biogas production are high, and the demand is also greater,” notes Suomen Lantakaasu CEO Leena Helminen.

In line with its strategy, Suomen Lantakaasu’s focus in the near future is especially on manure-based biogas production, which will be reinforced by waste and residue streams from the food industry.

“Investments in biogas plants require investment subsidies as well as incentivising distribution obligation and taxation solutions. Renewable energy investment projects do not necessarily advance in an unclear subsidy situation. This is unfortunate, as investing in biogas and recycled fertilisers supports Finland’s security of supply and self-sufficiency. At the same time, it can reduce the use of non-renewable natural resources and nutrient emissions into waterways,” Leena Helminen continues.

Construction of Suomen Lantakaasu’s biogas plant is progressing in Nurmo and Upper Savo

Suomen Lantakaasu’s liquefied biogas production plants currently under construction in Nurmo, South Ostrobothnia, and in Kiuruvesi, Upper Savo, will be completed and commissioned in 2026. Satellite plants producing pressurised biogas in Lapinlahti and Nurmes will be completed next year.

Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is a joint venture owned by food company Valio and biomethane company St1 Biokraft.
