Valio has published a Sustainability Report for 2025. Valio's responsibility work proceeded as planned during the year. Our climate work focuses on reducing emissions and on carbon sequestration. We are aiming for a carbon-neutral milk value chain by 2035. In 2025, we succeeded in reducing the emissions covered by our Climate Programme by 26%, taking carbon sequestration conservatively into account, compared to 2019. Emission reduction work was promoted, for example, in logistics, energy use at production plants, and packaging development, and at dairy farms.
In 2025, we prepared a Sustainability Report guided by ESRS reporting standards, along with which we gave a shorter overview of the highlights of our 2025 sustainability work. During the year, we continued our aspirational sustainability work together with our owners and partners.
Here are a few highlights of our sustainability work in 2025.

Valio exceeded its two SBTi climate targets
Valio achieved and exceeded its two SBTi climate targets. The target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from energy use at the production plants in Finland and Estonia was 47% compared to 2019, but the actual emission reduction was 60%. Emission reductions in milk collection logistics in Finland also exceeded the set target: the reduction target was 28%, but emissions decreased by 40%.
The area of regenerative farming increased
We made significant strides in regenerative farming. The area under regenerative farming on dairy farms grew to over 200,000 hectares. In 2024, there were 160,000 hectares of regenerative farming.

Future Valio Farmers programme was awarded
The new joint training programme launched by Valio and the cooperatives was awarded as the best cooperative innovation in Europe.
Biogas business progressed in line with targets
The construction of Suomen Lantakaasu Oy’s biogas plant projects proceeded as planned. Finland’s first industrial-scale manure biogas plants are planned to begin operations in 2026.

The number of biogas-powered milk collection trucks increased
In 2025, the number of biogas-powered milk collection trucks continued to grow. Four new biogas-powered trucks were introduced, bringing the total number of biogas-powered milk collection trucks in operation to ten. The biogas-powered trucks were driven 67% more during the year than in the previous year.
Valio’s emissions continued to decline
Greenhouse gas emissions under Valio’s climate programme decreased by 26% in 2025, taking carbon sequestration conservatively into account. Emissions have continued to fall, with a 23% reduction in 2024.
We developed the measurement of animal welfare
In the Animal Welfare Verification System (AWVS) project, we are developing a method for measuring and verifying cattle welfare. A new method based on the latest research, developed by the welfare researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland, takes into account all animal groups on dairy farms and measures their welfare using 45 welfare indicators. In 2025, cattle welfare measurements were piloted at 50 Valio farms.

Packaging development progressed towards circular economy goals
Valio is committed to a long-term strategy of making its packaging more suitable as raw materials for the circular economy – while also increasing its use of recycled plastic. In 2025, the share of renewable or recycled packaging materials was 73%, with a target of 80% by 2030. The share of recyclable packaging materials was 86%, with the goal of achieving 100% recyclability by 2030.
